Overview
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a crucial role in public health by enhancing spatial analysis, decision-making and resource allocation. However, disparities in GIS adoption and capacity across the WHO European Region hinder its full integration into health systems. This roadmap, developed through regional collaboration, outlines strategic priorities to strengthen GIS capabilities in public health, improve data sharing and ensure interoperability. The roadmap emphasizes governance, capacity-building, data management, software and infrastructure, and interagency collaboration as key pillars for achieving GIS-enabled health systems by 2030. Through a tiered implementation model, Member States in the WHO European Region at varying levels of GIS readiness can progressively integrate GIS into their health strategies, ultimately fostering data-driven decision-making and improving health outcomes across the Region. By 2030, this initiative aims to establish a robust regional GIS ecosystem that supports evidence-based and enhances health equity.
